I have always LOVED how stunning at home lifestyle sessions are. I secretly wish I had my own children (even though I am not near ready to have any) if only for the everyday chance to take beautiful photos of children at play in their home.
Until now I have never had the confidence to photograph a family at home in a lifestyle setting. I have always been afraid of what the lighting will be like, will I have enough ideas for things to do that I can photograph?
Finally I realized that I have the skill, I know how to play with light, I can think of fun things for a family to do. I knew that I needed to stop being scared and start taking photos of what I love, a family at play.
And it seems, whenever I try something new, it's in Calgary. So when I posted about my trip to Calgary this Christmas, I knew it would be too cold for an outdoor family session. So I jumped into the deep end and offered in home lifestyle sessions.
I cannot even begin to explain how amazingly these sessions went!! We started off in the master bedroom, capturing the family reading together and having some awesome tickle-fights. Then mom got some good cuddle time in... but I know that the kids loved jumping on the bed the most! Then we went down to the playroom and I got to see little C's favourite train, and how he loved to drive his car, and sweet Miss A showed me her favourite dolls. Then mom put on some music and A started to dance for us and boy-oh-boy she has some energy! Now A has always been a ham for her photos, but Little C does not like getting his picture taken... you could never tell that here because he was having SO MUCH FUN! If I wasn't sold on these sessions yet, this is what did it for me. For a kid who normally has a miserable time in a photography session to let go and play, and feel comfortable enough that when he was happy to turn and smile right at the camera? This is what these sessions are all about!
The session was easy, it was calm, Dad wasn't yelling at the kids to listen and Mom wasn't yelling at Dad for yelling at the kids. And more importantly, other than me telling people where to sit in reference to the light, not a single photo was staged.
This is the authenticity I have been craving in my family photos. Something I have only been able to achieve outdoors.
I am so excited about this new chapter in my photography journey, but I am still learning about the art of lifestyle photography, and I need your help!
